“A Quiet Eid Message, a Loud Political Silence”: Anita Among Breaks Cover After Shock Cabinet Exclusion

Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has made a low-key public return with a brief Eid al-Adha message, just hours after President Yoweri Museveni unveiled a proposed 2026–2031 cabinet list that notably left her out.

In a short post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Anita Annet Among wished Muslim faithful “warm and joyful Eid al-Adha Mubarak,” praying for peace, happiness, and blessings during the celebrations.

On the surface, the message appeared routine and apolitical. But its timing immediately drew attention across Uganda’s political circles and social media platforms, where observers quickly interpreted it as a carefully measured re-entry into public space after weeks of silence and intense political speculation.

Silence after a major political setback

What stood out most was not what she said—but what she did not say.

The message made no reference to the newly announced cabinet list. There was no congratulations to incoming ministers, no acknowledgment of the reshuffle, and no comment on the political changes that have significantly reshaped Uganda’s leadership structure.

That silence has added fuel to growing speculation about her current standing within the ruling establishment.

Until recently, Anita Annet Among was widely regarded as one of the most powerful political figures in the country, having served as Speaker of Parliament. Her omission from the new cabinet has therefore been interpreted by many analysts as a major political setback.

Cabinet exclusion sparks debate

Her absence from the new executive lineup has triggered intense discussion within political circles, especially because many had expected her to transition into a senior cabinet role following her exit from the Speaker race.

Instead, she was left out entirely.

At the same time, several individuals perceived to have had strained relationships with her during her time in parliamentary leadership have retained or strengthened their positions in government, adding to the political intrigue surrounding the reshuffle.

Among those who maintained influence are figures such as Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who continues to occupy a central role in government administration, and other senior officials who remained firmly embedded in the Cabinet structure.

Allies rise as she steps back

Interestingly, while Anita Annet Among herself was excluded, one of her close political allies, Justine Nameere, was appointed Minister of State for Local Government.

Nameere has in recent years been known as a strong public defender of Among’s leadership and political position, often engaging critics in media and political debates.

Her appointment has therefore created a sense of contradiction in the reshuffle—where allies are rewarded even as the principal figure is sidelined.

Political observers say this pattern may reflect a broader balancing strategy within the ruling system: maintaining influence networks while weakening individual political power centres.

A period of political uncertainty

Reports suggest that Anita Annet Among has largely stayed out of public view in recent weeks, following her withdrawal from the Speakership race. That decision came after growing political pressure and reports of investigations linked to alleged misconduct during her tenure.

Since then, she has not been seen taking part in major parliamentary or state events, further deepening speculation about her political future.

Her absence from key national ceremonies where new parliamentary leadership was confirmed only intensified public curiosity about her situation.

Investigations and political pressure

While details remain largely unconfirmed in the public domain, sources close to political developments indicate that ongoing investigations are examining aspects of financial management and administrative decisions made during her time as Speaker.

These reports have contributed to a growing sense of uncertainty around her next political steps.

Despite this, Anita Annet Among has not made any detailed public statement addressing the cabinet reshuffle or the speculation surrounding her political position.

Museveni’s balancing approach

The developments surrounding her exclusion are being viewed by analysts as part of President Yoweri Museveni’s long-standing political strategy of balancing power centres within the ruling system.

Rather than completely dismantling political networks, the approach often involves shifting individuals while retaining or elevating selected allies within the same camps.

In this case, the simultaneous exclusion of Anita Annet Among and appointment of figures close to her political circle has been interpreted as a calculated effort to redistribute influence without triggering open factional collapse.

A future still uncertain

For now, Anita Annet Among remains the elected Woman MP for Bukedea District, but her broader political trajectory is increasingly the subject of speculation.

Her brief Eid message may have been simple, but its timing has ensured it remains politically loaded.

In Uganda’s fast-moving political environment, even silence—and a few carefully chosen words—can signal far more than what is openly said.
